FGM DIARIES PAGE 1
2019
Textiles

A diary featuring a real life story from a victim of FGM. This diary also shows diagrams of the different types of FGM that are performed.

My aim for this artwork was not to create a shock factor but was to highlight the issue which is very often ignored and hidden.

This page shows type 2 of FGM which is excision where part or all of the clitoris and the inner labia has been removed and the with or without removal of the labia majora has remained.

I have removed parts of the fabric to give a visual representation and have replaced it with lace.
FGM DIARIES PAGE 2
2019
This page has been hand stitched using a childlike font. This is to show how young the girls are when FGM is performed.
Black thread has been used to imitate handwriting.
FGM DIARIES PAGE 5
2019
Textiles

This page shows type type 3 of FGM which is infibulation. This is where they have narrowed the vaginal orifice with creation of a covering seal by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and/or labia majora, with or without removal of the clitoris. The appositioning of the wound edges consists of stitching or holding the cut areas together for a certain period of time (for example, girls’ legs are bound together), to create the covering seal. A small opening is left for urine and menstrual blood to escape.

I have removed the parts on the fabric to represent this.

The pillow case has 39 'I don't's to represent the 39,000 child marriages which take place on a daily basis.

There is a lace insert which creates a bridal feel and the petals symbolise the girls innocence.
